Shared, VPS or cloud hosting — which plan does your website actually need?

A plain-language guide to traffic, CPU and memory limits, when a shared cPanel plan is enough, and the signs it is time to move to a KVM VPS or managed cloud.

Shared hosting: the right start for most websites

On shared hosting your site runs on a server with other accounts, each kept within limits for CPU, memory and processes. It is the most affordable option and the easiest to run: a control panel like cPanel handles email, databases, SSL and backups. A company website, a portfolio or a small WordPress site rarely needs more.

Signs you have outgrown shared hosting

Consider moving up when you regularly see one of these:

  • Pages slow down at busy times even after caching is set up
  • You hit resource-limit or "508" errors in your control panel
  • You need software the shared server does not allow (a specific database, Node.js or Python services, background workers)
  • You run an online store or application where every second of delay costs sales

VPS: dedicated resources and root access

A VPS gives you guaranteed vCPU, RAM and storage that no other customer can use, plus full root access to install whatever you need. It is the usual next step for online stores, portals, business applications and agencies hosting many sites. The trade-off is responsibility: on a self-managed VPS you look after the operating system, or you add a managed service or a control panel.

Dedicated servers: the whole machine

When a VPS is no longer enough — large databases, heavy traffic, or workloads that need every core and disk to themselves — a dedicated server gives you the entire physical machine. It costs more and is usually chosen for predictable, sustained load rather than a growing website.

A simple way to decide

Start with the smallest plan that fits today, on a provider that lets you upgrade without rebuilding. Move from shared to VPS when limits start to show, and from VPS to dedicated when a VPS is consistently busy. Paying for capacity you will not use for a year is the most common way businesses overspend on hosting.
