.in, .com or .co.in? How to choose the right domain for an Indian business
Which extension customers trust, when to register more than one, how renewal pricing works and why WHOIS privacy and DNS control matter before you buy.
.in, .co.in or .com?
.in is India’s country domain and tells visitors immediately that you serve Indian customers. .co.in is the long-standing "company in India" variant. .com remains the most recognised extension worldwide. For an Indian business, .in or .co.in is a natural first choice; if your brand name is available as a .com too, registering it protects you from someone else using it.
Register more than one when it protects the brand
If customers might type your name with another ending, or a competitor could register a confusing look-alike, owning both the .in and the .com is cheap insurance. Point the second one at your main website so nothing is wasted.
.IN domains need identity verification (e-KYC)
The .IN Registry requires every .in-family domain holder to verify their identity. After registration the Registry emails a verification link to the registrant email address; it is completed with Aadhaar or DigiLocker, and the name and address on the domain must match the ID used. A .in domain that is not verified can be put on hold. New .in registrations are also restricted to individuals and organisations based in India — so enter accurate registrant details from the start.
Check the renewal price before you buy
Many registrars sell the first year cheaply and renew at a much higher rate. Look at the renewal price for the extension you choose, and consider registering for several years at once if the multi-year price is fair.
Keep control of your domain
Register the domain in your own (or your company’s) name, with an email address you will always have access to. Keep the domain locked against unauthorised transfer, turn on privacy protection where the extension allows it, and make sure you can manage DNS yourself. Whoever controls the domain controls your website and email.
IndianSoftwares (Mindware Infotech) registers domains, hosts websites and email, issues SSL certificates and builds websites and applications for Indian businesses, with a GST invoice for every order.
